Construction of a new student dormitory in Vukovar-Srijem county, Croatia, has provided 108 beds for a college in Vukovar city. By reducing accommodation costs and improving the facilities, especially for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, the college’s courses have been made more accessible for anyone wishing to study there.
New student accommodation in Vukovar, Croatia makes higher education more accessible
- 26 July 2019
We’re so proud that our college can now offer accommodation to students from all backgrounds, so that anyone can come here to study. Our new facilities contribute to the further development of higher education in Vukovar and eastern Croatia.
The College of Applied Sciences ‘Lavoslav Ružička’ in Vukovar was established in 2005. Originally, there was no accommodation for its students. The only option for people coming from outside the surrounding area to study was to find private accommodation in the city.
Construction of a student dormitory has addressed this lack of accommodation with 58 bedrooms across a total of 2 287 m2. The ‘Student Dorm Leopold’ provides modern sleeping and residential quarters, particularly for students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
The city’s first student dormitory
Every room has a desk, bathroom, television set and kitchenette with built-in appliances. To make the accommodation as accessible as possible, 80 of the dormitory’s beds are intended for disadvantaged students.
The modern facilities improve living standards for all students by offering a computer room, a common room for social activities, professional laundry services and five electric bicycles available for renting. Free Wi-Fi and internet access is available throughout the building.
Solar power panels were installed on the roof and contribute to energy savings and the sustainability of the college.
Reducing costs, improving diversity
Today, the dormitory makes the college even more attractive for students who have to travel from other regions, allowing it to develop its study programs and increase the diversity of students.
The accommodation and its facilities have helped decrease the costs of studying through the additional services it provides. As a result, the wellbeing of students and their grades are showing continuous improvement.
Local construction and other service companies were employed to implement the project, contributing to local economic activities and infrastructure. Additional employees will be hired in future to maintain and service the dormitory.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Construction of the Student Dorm in Vukovar” is EUR 3 100 000, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 3 100 000 through the “Competitiveness and Cohesion” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Jobs, Growth and Investment”.
