An initiative co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund has provided the Austrian capital with a new centre of excellence for sustainable scientific and technological innovation.
Aspern IQ Technology Centre supports technological innovation for start-ups and young businesses
- 07 May 2014
The aspern IQ Technology Centre has been built to be highly energy efficient and climate friendly. The energy surplus standard of the aspern IQ Technology Centre is the result of combining passive house building standards with highly efficient building technologies as well as renewable energy sources. Along with a contaminant-free environment it will make the building comfortable for users who will benefit from high quality work places. With the aspern IQ we clearly set new standards in building sustainability.
The aspern IQ Technology Centre was built on the east side of Vienna to accommodate small and medium sized businesses in the field of sustainable technology.
The technology centre provides start-ups and young businesses with 6 500 m2 of office space, research infrastructure as well as premises for training and conferences. Young technology companies can rent low-cost space in the new centre, whose main aims are to encourage innovation, research, sustainable economic growth and the competitiveness of the region.
Sustainable construction
The new building – designed to accommodate 25 companies and to provide workplaces for 250 people – was built with environmentally friendly materials and using sustainable construction methods. As a result, the building generates more energy than it consumes. Much of the building’s electricity and energy for heating comes from 1 300 m2 of photovoltaic cells that have been installed on the building’s outer walls and roof.
The aspern IQ Technology Centre is one of the first buildings to be constructed as part of the Aspern Seestadt project: a 2.4 million m2 lakeside real estate development built on a former airfield which includes a business district, retail areas, housing, cultural, leisure and sports facilities.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “aspern IQ Technology Centre / Technologiezentrum Aspern IQ” amounted to EUR 15 000 000, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributed EUR 2 595 356 from the “Vienna” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period.
