Better drinking water for Romania’s Dâmbovița County

  • 20 December 2017

To ensure more residents of Romania’s Dâmbovița County have access to clean drinking water and effective water treatment services, this project modernised and expanded the area’s water infrastructure.

Many residents in Romania’s Dâmbovița County lack easy access to quality drinking water. Furthermore, many people live in homes that are not directly connected to the region’s waste water collection and treatment system.

To improve this situation, the project refurbished, expanded and modernised the area’s entire water infrastructure, thus providing the 143 113 residents within the project area with reliable access to quality drinking water. As a result of this work, pollution levels have decreased and the affected residents are enjoying a better quality of life.

Located in Romania’s Sud-Muntenia Region, located in the south of the country, Dâmbovița County includes the townships of Târgoviște, Moreni, Găești, Pucioasa, Fieni and Titu.

Clean drinking water, safe waste water disposal

This project represents Phase II of a larger infrastructure project. The majority of work was implemented in Phase I, which funded during the 2007-2013 programming period.

Phase II involved additional work on both the county’s drinking water supply systems and its waste water collection and treatment systems. As to the former, work included the extension and rehabilitation of 9.75 km of distribution networks, the refurbishing Moreni’s chlorination plant and two water reservoirs, and the implementation of a supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA).

As to the waste water collection and treatment system component of the project, Phase II work included extending the sewage system by 5.32 km, rehabilitating .12 km of the sewage network and adding an additional 10.99 km to the network. The project also constructed two new waste water pumping stations in Titu and refurbished the waste water treatment plants in Moreni, Găești and Titu.

Nearing 100 % connection

With the completion of Phase II, 95 % of Dâmbovița County’s population is now connected to the area’s drinking water network. Furthermore, 94 % of the county is connected to the sewage system.

In addition, thanks to the work completed during both Phase I and Phase II, the risk of uncontrolled and untreated waste water has been significantly minimised, thus reducing potentially hazardous pollution to the surrounding environment.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Extension and modernisation of water supply and waste water treatment systems in Dâmbovița County - Phase II” is EUR 9 744 142, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 6 302 610 through the “Large Infrastructure” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
