A 24.18 km section of Poland’s S61 express road, between the village of Śniadowo and the Łomża West junction, has been built with EU funding. The project included construction of the 17 km Śniadowo - Łomża South junctions and a 7.2 km road connecting the Łomża South and Łomża West junction on express road S61. The contract signed for the second component also includes construction of 8.9 km of national road DK63 and a 0.6 km section connecting the Łomża South junction with voivodship road DW677.
New express road built between Śniadowo and Łomża, Poland
- 14 June 2022
The section of the S61 is a dual carriageway with two 3.5 m traffic lanes, a 2.5 m emergency lane and a soft shoulder at least 0.75 m wide on both sides of a 5 m central reservation. The new DK63 section is a single carriageway.
Safe connections
Running through the Mazowieckie and Podlaskie regions in north-eastern Poland, the stretch of the S61 lies to the west of the DK63. Its junctions allow safe connections with the rest of the road network, and provide access to adjacent areas via a network of service routes.
The project was implemented using the design-build system, in which design and construction services are provided by a single contractor. The express road has a design speed of 100 km/h.
Additional infrastructure
Further elements of the work included construction of bridges, viaducts, culverts, noise barriers and animal passages, and two service areas – Chomentowo East and Chomentowo West – as well as green spaces.
A rainwater drainage system and storm sewer were installed, along with pre-treatment devices for rainwater flowing into watercourses or reservoirs. In addition, a traffic management system, lighting and safety infrastructure such as anti-glare shields and fencing were set up.
Other roads in the area were modified where necessary to accommodate the new route, while structures blocking its path were demolished.
Electricity, water, gas, telecommunications and railway infrastructure was adapted as required, and footpaths, cycle paths, emergency exits and bus lay-bys were built.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Construction of the S61 express road, section Śniadowo junction-Łomża West junction” is EUR 198 886 339, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 107 246 906 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Development of the TEN-T road network and multimodal transport”.
