Mobile app developed in Italy helps people find jobs – by playing games

  • 21 April 2020

A project from Italy’s Lazio region has brought employers and jobseekers together on an innovative digital platform. Employerland provides tailored games and quizzes through a mobile app that people play to get a job. Hundreds of SMEs and big companies from across Italy have signed up to the platform. Around 100 000 people have played the Employerland app and around 1 000 have secured work through the system. The project’s success has led to the creation of nine jobs at the Employerland company.

Employerland is not only an app, it is a new way for recruiting and employer branding in accordance with top employers’ and big companies’ needs.

Gabriele Lizzani, CEO of Employerland

The project used the latest digital technologies to provide human resources teams with a new way to recruit staff that moves beyond the traditional approaches of reading CVs and publishing vacancies online or in newspapers.

Since its launch in 2014, around 1 000 highly qualified people have secured positions through the app, which has been downloaded by more than 100 000 users. More than 800 companies have registered on the platform, including big employers such as Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Oracle, Pirelli, Lamborghini, Luxottica, Bosch, Salini Impregilo, and Nestlé.

The Employerland team has held more than 50 corporate events and a number of recruiting days that have attracted over 20 000 young people. The app is aimed in particular at young people who regularly use digital technologies.

Virtual challenges

Jobseekers can download the app to their phone or tablet. They then register their profile and start looking for games and employers. Users take part in virtual challenges, answering questions about a specific company to earn points and showcase their skills. By winning a game, the player gains access to the company’s employment teams and a chance to secure a job. Moreover, people who deliver the best performance in a game are provided with the special Skillpass, which allows them to have an interview with a company during the Employerland recruiting events.

Companies can use the platform to raise their profile in the jobs market by advertising posts through the app or at the events. The process enables employers to tailor their recruitment requirements through a game or competition that is customised to their specific needs. In addition, they can implement branding campaigns via the app to attract talented people.

Reducing costs

Employerland’s tailored approach helps companies reduce their recruitment costs and make their selection processes more efficient. This is because talented candidates will only take the tests if they are motivated to work for the business in question. There is also a space on the platform where employers can use the tests and quizzes to engage with and train their existing staff.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Employerland” is EUR 500 000, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 350 000 through the “Lazio ERDF” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Employment and labour market”.
