On Tuesday 4 February, France is organising the kick-off event in Lyon, to launch French presidency of the EU Strategy for the Alpine region.

Along the year 2020, it is a unique partnership between the French State – National Agency for the cohesion of territories-, and the three regions members of the EUSALP Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, which is taking place.

The Presidency has established an ambitious programme, under the moto, “together for a greener Alpine region”, in accordance with seven main principles for their chairmanship:

  • Participation Involving regional alpine players
  • Embedding Activating the different funds and programmes for the EUSALP
  • Cohesion Including all types of regions as mountains, valleys, cities
  • Young people Increasing the participation of young people in EUSALP activities
  • Pragmatism Complementing existing coordination with EU funds and former presidency
  • Concrete Promoting the work of the EUSALP as a basis for European, national and regional public policies
  • Promotion Promoting the activities and work of the EUSALP
  • One of the aim of the French presidency is to boost the ecological transition of the EUSALP area in order to tackle climate change. This goal is in ad equation with the Commission’s priority, and the recent presentation of the European Green Deal, whose’ implementation will massively be supported by EU funds. In this respect, the EU Strategy for the Alpine Region could benefit from a strong coordination of EU cohesion policy programmes, in order to make a bigger impact on the ground.

In Lyon, the event will gather all of the EUSALP stakeholders, as well as, a high political attendance, with Ms Jacqueline Gourault Minister responsible for Territorial cohesion and Relations with local authorities, Mr Laurent Wauquiez, President of the Regional Council of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Mr Renaud Muselier, President of the Regional Council of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and President of Regions of France and Mrs Marie-Guite Dufay, President of the Regional Council of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.
