Habitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development taking place in Quito (Ecuador) on 17-20 October.

This century will see a substantial majority of the world’s population living in urban centres.

The mission of the Habitat III Conference is  the adoption of a New Urban Agenda which will set global standards of achievement in sustainable urban development by rethinking the way we build, manage, and live in cities through cooperation with stakeholders and urban actors at all levels of government as well as the private sector.

About 30 000 participants from all over the world are taking part to this major event (national, regional and local authorities, civil society, private sector, academia …).

Commissionner Corina Creţu is the Head of the EU Delegation at the Conference and will take the floor at the Opening Plenary Session.

A Discussion Paper on the Habitat III process was prepared by the Commission and was discussed and then endorsed in the Council and served as a milestone for a common EU position.

Next to the plenary sessions and the high-level roundtables, the European Commission services are organising 8 networking events:

  • The Urban Agenda for the European Union and the Urban dimension of EU policy
  • EU Open to the World: Cities as actors of open innovation
  • International Urban Cooperation: Sustainable Cities
  • The environmental performance and sustainable development of cities: EU tools with potential for global application
  • Innovative means of implementation of the New Urban Agenda
  • Protracted Displacement in Urban Settings
  • Building urban resilience to disaster risks and climate change for sustainable development: linking Sendai, New York, Paris and Quito
  • Making my city a better place to live: lessons from European Cities.
