Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

Further progress was made in April on the CBAM, the EU’s landmark tool to put a fair price on the carbon emitted during the production of carbon intensive goods that are entering the EU, and to encourage cleaner industrial production in non-EU countries. On 18 April, the European Parliament approved the political agreement of December 2022. And on 25 April, the CBAM agreement was also formally approved by the Council of the European Union. In particular, the group’s report advocated making EU customs more coherent and simpler for businesses, more useful in supervising supply chains and more agile dealing with the digital and green transitions. Later this spring, the Commission will come forward with its proposals on how to get us there!

Ukraine: Commission extends customs duty and VAT waiver on imports of life-saving goods for ten Member States

Around 4 million Ukrainians have now been granted temporary protection in Europe, while millions more have had to flee their homes but remained in Ukraine. EU Member States are providing humanitarian assistance to large numbers of persons fleeing the war, while also supporting internally displaced Ukrainians at risk of hunger and disease. That’s why the Commission has extended, for and at the request of ten Member States, the current possibility to temporarily waive customs duties and VAT on the importation from non-EU countries of food, blankets, tents, electric generators and other life-saving equipment destined for Ukrainians affected by the war.

Interview Ukraine

Russia’s war in Ukraine, which began almost one year ago, called for a swift, decisive and determined reaction from the European Commission, both in tackling Russia and its allies and in supporting Ukraine. Policies steered by DG TAXUD have played an important role in this crisis response. Nearly 12 months and 10 sanction packages later, we sat down with colleagues from across DG TAXUD to understand their contribution to the effort – what has been done, how it was achieved, and what this work means to them on a personal level.
