SELFIE Forum 2021 brings the SELFIE community together

The second SELFIE Forum took place on the 7th and 8th October 2021. This edition of the SELFIE Forum was aimed at empowering schools and teachers (together with school leaders) to take action for the development of their digital capacity and skills.

The second SELFIE Forum also served to launch SELFIE for work-based learning and to celebrate the milestone that over 1,700,000 school leaders, teachers and students have used the tool since its launch in 2018.

The event brought together highly distinguished speakers such as Commissioner Gabriel, Commissioner Schmit, Ms. Themis Christophidou (DG EAC) and Mr. Bernard Magenhann (JRC) amongst others and more than 800 attendants participated through Zoom webinar. The event was also live streamed on various channels where we recorded more than 3,500 views.

The SELFIE Forum was an excellent opportunity to bring the SELFIE community together to share best practices and to encourage and support more schools to participate. As Commissioner Gabriel rightly pointed out: “Together we reflect better”. The Forum gathered different viewpoints on SELFIE use. Representatives from Ministries of Education discussed SELFIE usage at system level and ways of creating and supporting an ecosystem around SELFIE involving practitioners like school leaders and national coordinators. The keynote speeches also emphasized the research dimension of SELFIE as an instrument to inform the development of the tool, its use to inform policymaking and how it enables scientific research.

The Forum offered seven interactive workshops where participants engaged in discussions and hands on activities. They had also the opportunity to continue their discussions and network informally in six thematic sessions at the end of Day 1.

As a follow-up to the Forum and given the interest the audience has shown for the Digital Action Plan workshop, we have decided to rerun it on November 17th between 3 pm and 6 pm. If you want to receive more information about it, please drop us an email at JRC-EAC-SELFIE-TOOL@ec.europa.eu.

Schools were given a dedicated space for contributions through posters, E-posters and videos. Please visit it here to find inspiring examples.

The event was moderated by Ms. Sally Reynolds, Chief Operating Officer for the Media & Learning Association, and Sara Serevalle, drew real-time visualisations summarising the discussions.

The Forum was co-organised by the Joint Research Centre, in association with the Directorate General for Education and Culture with the contribution of the Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion.

SELFIE is a practical and effective tool for whole-school digital planning to support national and regional digital education policies. It is an excellent example of how JRC science for policy evolved into a practical tool that can impact thousands of schools in Europe and beyond.
