The Interpreter Training Tool (ITT)

What is it and what will it be used for?

date:  13/12/2024

SCIC has developed the Interpreter Training Tool (ITT) that enables remote simultaneous interpreter training using a double channel solution in a single headset. SCIC trainers, university trainers and students can join a virtual classroom and virtual booths to practise simultaneous interpreting in real time, with live speeches or recordings. Trainers can assess interpretation listening to the original speech and the interpretation in a single device.

Usability testing (in total 25 sessions) of the Interpreter Training Tool (ITT) took place between May and June 2024 and was followed by pilot tests with universities (University of Warsaw, University of Leipzig and the University of Bath) in June 2024. We have also prepared a Tool Guide, a two-pager with key guidance and tutorial for students.

We have now started contacting universities to schedule connections tests and briefings. A stable and strong internet connection, a laptop with a specific browser and a cabled headset are necessary to assure smooth use of ITT. During the briefings we explain how the trainer’s and the student’s links work so that the university trainers can also support the students during the class.

If you were granted Virtual Classes and PA online, you will shortly hear from us about an ITT briefing session. We encourage you to gather as many trainers as possible to learn together and also involve students if possible.

We are currently piloting the ITT in simultaneous virtual classes and online PA sessions in the first semester of academic year 2024-2025 and the tool will continue to be rolled out to many other universities in the second semester.
