Speech Repository

After work on the Knowledge Centre, we have now turned to the Speech Repository, where, on top of the usual maintenance work, we are now in the middle of a flurry of activity to prepare the migration to a new version of our content management system

Both platforms are scheduled to migrate in parallel in autumn 2022. What’s more, they will be revamped in order to have the same “look and feel”.

On the language front, we are happy to announce the addition of 45 new speeches (19 speeches with pedagogical material and 26 real-life speeches) in the Greek section of the Speech Repository. We sincerely hope that all interested parties will find this material useful to hone their skills and brush up on their Greek and their knowledge of current affairs in the Greek-speaking world.  Special thanks go to Maria Giannakopoulou, from the EL Unit, who coordinated this initiative, to our Greek colleagues who volunteered and recorded speeches, and to our Spanish and English colleagues who graded the speeches.

There are other new additions to the language sections. The Russian section is currently being updated by our Russian blue book trainee Alina Kazakova: obsolete speeches are being eliminated, the accompanying information - description, speech details etc. – is being updated. In addition, our Russian partner universities – Herzen St. Petersburg, Astrakhan State University and Moscow State Linguistic University – are providing us with new speeches of various levels of difficulties.

We have also added a new language to our repertoire, namely Serbian (with 8 speeches so far).

We are also happy to announce that, thanks to the contributions received both from our SCIC speakers and graders – our interpreter colleagues – and from speakers at our partner universities – we have been able to meet our target of publishing more than 300 speeches in 2021. Some more stats: currently 76% of the speeches have been transcribed (again thanks to our interpreter colleagues, our blue book trainees and the universities), and in 2021 there were 2021 users of My Speech Repository.

More to come in 2022…
