In Memory of John F. Ryan, Deputy Director General of DG SANTE - Tribute by Director General Sandra Gallina

date: 15/02/2024
John was a true pillar of the public health community and a founding-father in building the European Health Union that we have today. His work spanned the widest possible range of issues, including cancer, mental health, public health emergencies, tobacco policy and so much more. Over the years, he helped to steer our health policy through major crises: from avian influenza H1N1, HIV/AIDS and Ebola, to the biggest pandemic in our lifetime, COVID-19. John always brought intelligent, insightful and inspiring ideas to the table and found solutions to the most impenetrable problems.
In his 40 years in the Commission, John spent the majority of this time in DG SANTE (SANCO), going on to become head of unit in 2001, Director in 2016 and deputy Director General in 2021. He was a born leader, looked up to for his professionalism, intelligence, work ethic and dedication to public health. He was also a much-loved and respected colleague. John was always friendly, polite and approachable, offering help and advice to anyone that needed it. He will be remembered for his gentle nature, his interest in others and his dry sense of humour.
John’s kindness and generosity expanded beyond the workplace too. He was actively involved in the community in Luxembourg, volunteering with the homeless and in the local drug rehabilitation centre. In this aspect of his life, too, he was an inspiration.
We have been touched by the outpouring of appreciation for John from stakeholders, politicians and international organisations since he passed away. These have only served to highlight how greatly admired he was and how much he delivered for so many.
As one of my closest colleagues in these last years, I could see how vast his experience was. I am convinced that John left an immense legacy and the fruits of his work in public health will live on, improving the lives of EU citizens for decades to come.
We all miss him terribly.
May he rest in peace.
Sandra Gallina
