65% reduction in household food waste in Bruges: promising first results of the ‘Food Winners Brugge’ campaign
9 challenges, 5 weeks
The 512 participants of this year’s campaign are now true experts against food waste! They learned to plan, shop, store and cook efficiently through 9 challenges spread over 5 weeks. The campaign started and ended with participants measuring the food they waste, in order to assess the progress made.
Results are very positive: participants managed to reduce their food waste by 67% on average. This means that annually, households save 19,662 kilograms of food overall, equivalent to 62,918 kilograms of CO2 and €82,383.
50, 500, 5000
The Food Winners Brugge project consists of three phases:
- In a pilot project last year (phase 1), 50 food waste ambassadors were trained to support participants during the next phases of the project.
- Phase two targeted 500 residents of Bruges to reduce their food waste.
- According to Loick Bekaert from FoodWIN: ‘Next year is the final phase and the goal is to have 5,000 people from Bruges take up the fight against food waste. If 5,000 people from Bruges reduce their food waste by 30%, we can save up to 132,000 kilograms of food per year. Together we can make a huge difference’.
For the 3rd phase of the project that will run next year, companies, sports associations, schools and other organisations will be invited to participate as well.
