The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently published a report drawing together the most recent information on food waste across the supply chain in Ireland. The report is intended to provide a snapshot of currently available data and waste management practices at the different stages of the supply chain; as well as highlighting waste prevention activities.

The report includes a first statement on Ireland’s best estimates of food waste data required under the revised Waste Framework Directive, using 2018 data to test approaches and methodologies, and identify data gaps. Following a gap analysis, it has been established that there is a high degree of confidence in household data and medium level for retail and distribution and restaurants and food services. A number of studies are underway to address the identified gaps in other sectors.

The report is intended to be a ‘living document’ and will be amended as new data and information becomes available. The document is published on the recently revamped website of EPA:
