The ‘Too good for the bin!’ federal award rewards outstanding projects with innovative ideas to reduce food waste in Germany in five different categories: agriculture & production, retail, food services, society and education and digitisation.

On 20 May 2021, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) announced this year’s winners:

• Agriculture & production: Dörrwerk GmbH produces staple food (like soups) from saved raw products.
• Retail: Veggie Specials remarkets vegan food (e.g. mislabelled foods) through its own online shop.
• Food Services: The football club 1. FC Heidenheim 1846 invites its staff to ‘leftover lunches’, using unsold catering from sport events.
• Society and education: Relics developed porcelain vessels with cooling effect to prolong the shelf life of vegetables and fruits in households.
• Digitisation: Danone GmbH developed an online shop for its major customers to distribute products near the end of shelf-life.

Promotion Prizes:

• The fishery Schröder processes fish, which is usually thrown away as by-catch.
• The farmer Margit Jung makes soup out of cull hen.
• GastroHilft saves food from stores, restaurants and households to redistribute it to or make fresh meals for people in need.
