Food saving warriors at Farmers' Markets in Greece

Boroume

date:  22/04/1999

Almost 100 tonnes of fresh produce were saved and donated to charities, through the ‘Boroume at the Farmers' Market’ programme*, in Greece in 2020. Even during this difficult period of the pandemic, the sellers of the collaborating Farmers' Markets in Athens and Thessaloniki responded to the weekly actions of Boroume volunteers and donated their surplus produce as food aid for people in need.

Since 2015, when the programme started, hundreds of volunteers have participated in more than 2 600 weekly actions and managed to collect and donate to local charities more than 500 tonnes of produce.

Thanks to the generosity and social solidarity of the sellers in the farmers’ markets, the participation of volunteers (ranging from volunteers supporting Boroume or other organisations such as recipient charities, to company employees, international and local students) and the support of The Hellenic Initiative Australia, the programme continues to save good, nutritious food and donate it to support people in need.
