Tackling food waste in Slovenia with the LIFE project CARE4CLIMATE

date:  16/12/2020

The Slovenian project CARE4CLIMATE (funded through the EU’s LIFE Programme* - LIFE 17 IPC/SI/000007) addresses the gaps in the implementation of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in sectors with the highest potential for the reduction of emissions, as well as in sectors where emissions are still not being reduced. On top of implementing actions for efficient energy use in buildings and road transport, the project also focuses on reducing food waste in Slovenia.

The project has already presented the methodology for compositional analysis of bio-waste aiming to determine food waste levels. Slovenia will get a better insight on household food waste levels in 2021 through compositional analysis, combined with the diary method.

The main food waste actions put forward in the project are the awareness-raising campaigns and capacity building (through workshops, webinars, events) for various stakeholders along the food supply chain. The slogan of the campaign is ‘Stran pa ne bomo metal!’, which is an old Slovenian saying meaning ‘We are not wasting it!’, where 'it' primarily stands for food.

* The LIFE programme is the European Union’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action created in 1992. The current funding period 2014-2020 has a budget of €3.4 billion.
