Food banks: a beneficial solution to prevent food waste, for the people and for the planet

COVID-19 has shed light on the role played by the members of the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA).

Their role is well described in the editorial written by the FEBA President for the Forum Network of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) (published on World Food Day on 16 October 2020), as well as in the article published by FoodDrinkEurope about the collaboration between FEBA members and the food supply chain to prevent food waste and redistribute surplus food to charities, ahead of the first-ever International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.

The activity of food banks is bringing innovation. At the Sicilian Agro-Food Markets (MAAS), Intesa Sanpaolo and Banco Alimentare presented the project ‘RE-fished: from the illegal to the solidarity market’ aiming at the recovery, processing and redistribution of fish confiscated by control authorities as resulting from illegal fishing practices.
