National survey to inform initiatives to reduce food waste

date:  22/10/2020

The Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) undertook a national representative survey (1.000 adults aged 16+) during early September 2020, to provide an understanding of the current status quo in terms of Irish citizens’ attitudes to food waste and the level of consciousness of any positive actions being taken to reduce it. Survey topics include concerns for food waste, managing food at home, food waste and COVID-19 and date marking.

The survey findings provide a reliable statistical benchmark to help guide future communications and activities to reduce food waste in Ireland. The infographic below and EPA press release provide some of the key insights from the national survey. In addition, an online #StopFoodWasteChallenge with chef Catherine Fulvio was run over four weeks on Facebook, through weekly videos, with a recipe and tips to help reduce food waste at home, followed by live Q&A sessions.
