Innovative solution helps EDEKA & Apeel cut retail food waste by 50%.

date:  21/09/2020

In August 2020, EDEKA (one of the leading grocery retailers in Germany) and Apeel (plant-derived solutions to help organic and conventional fresh food providers increase produce quality and reduce food waste) released the results of an extensive pilot project of Apeel avocados in 2.900 EDEKA and Netto Marken-Discount stores in Germany.

Apeel has developed a plant-based protective coating that keeps fruit and vegetables fresher longer by slowing moisture loss and oxidation - thus extending quality and shelf life across the supply chain. With this innovative approach, EDEKA experienced a 50% reduction in food waste in the avocado category and 20% increase in sales, which the German retailer attributes to less waste and increased customer demand.

After the successful pilot, EDEKA introduced Apeel produce at more than 11.000 EDEKA and Netto stores throughout Germany. Avocados, oranges, and clementines, under the World Wildlife Fund project, are the first Apeel produce categories available at EDEKA and Netto. In partnership with their suppliers, EDEKA and Apeel plan to introduce additional longer-lasting produce categories and further their commitment to sustainability.
