Hungarian Food Bank Association

‘Live Wastelessly!’ A new awareness campaign in Hungary to reduce food waste.

date:  21/09/2020

The campaign, launched by the MediaUnion Foundation in August 2020, will run until February 2021. One of its main goals is to change social attitudes towards food waste, and in the long run to reduce food waste in Hungary.

The initiative has two main pillars: a strong online campaign and a TV, radio, press and PR campaign, both aiming to raise public awareness to the extent and value of food thrown away. The communication materials created in the context of the campaign, will provide specific tips on what to do with leftovers. There will also be a multi-station educational road show.

Hungarians throw away about 68 kilograms of food per person in the trash every year, while more than half of the food waste comes from households.

Every year, the MediaUnion Foundation selects an important social issue, around which it launches a communication campaign in order to draw people's attention to the selected topic. This year, the proposal of the Hungarian Food Bank Association for a food waste prevention campaign was warmly welcomed. The campaign is supported by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and the National Food Chain Safety Office of Hungary (Nebih).
