During the COVID-19 crisis, several online education materials were distributed to children through the Wasteless campaign (Maradék nélkül), organized by the National Food Chain Safety Office of Hungary and co-funded by the EU-LIFE Programme. Also, a drawing contest about food waste prevention was launched in April, targeting school children.

Since the beginning of the Wasteless School Programme in 2016, a number of education materials have been developed, supported by short animations and ready-to-use presentations and guides for teachers. More recently, a food safety story book on food waste prevention practices in the kitchen was published as an audio book (available also in e-book). For the adult consumers, the National Food Chain Safety Office published a Guide for kitchen hygiene and food safety during human epidemiologic situations, which also focuses on food waste prevention.

Furthermore, due to measures taken to restrict the epidemic, children are not allowed to attend schools, thus the classic school programme activities of Wasteless had to be replaced. For this reason, the National Food Chain Safety Office launched in April 2020 a drawing contest about food waste prevention, targeting 8- to 12-year-old children. In addition to the individual prizes for the kids, the most skillful artists’ schools will be rewarded with composting bins (20 in total). More than 280 beautiful drawings have been received. The virtual gallery of drawings can be viewed here and you are invited to cast your vote by clicking ‘like’!
