Welcome to the October edition of the Hub’s newsletter, bringing you the latest EU data on food waste and other important news and resources.

Eurostat published the results of the first dedicated statistical monitoring of the amount of food waste in the European Union by sector of activity for the year 2020, learn more in the news section.

Check out how members of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Waste marked the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste!

Keep an eye on the COP 27 side events organised in the different pavilions (EU, Food systems etc.), as experts discuss the importance of establishing sustainable food systems and tackling food loss and waste to reach climate targets.

Eurostat published EU food waste estimates for 2020

The most recent EU data shows that nearly 57 million tonnes of food waste (127 kg/inhabitant) are generated annually with an associated market value estimated at 130 billion euros.

13th meeting of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste

The second meeting of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste in its second mandate (2022-2026) took place on 20 October. Discussions focused on the contribution of food loss and waste prevention to food security and mitigating climate change effects, EU initiatives and global developments.

WRAP: research on consumer behaviour

Joint research undertaken by WRAP and Hellmann's indicates that nearly half of respondents throw away as much food or more than they did this time last year (2021), revealing an opportunity for people to save further by reducing waste in their homes.
