Glyphosate: Commission adopts a renewal for 10 years

date:  28/11/2023

As announced in a statement on 16 November, today, the European Commission has adopted the Implementing Regulation to renew, for 10 years, the approval of glyphosate.

This is in line with the EU’s legislation which obliges the Commission to adopt an Implementing Regulation when no qualified majority, either in favor or against, is reached in the Standing Committee and in the Appeal Committee, as in the case of glyphosate this autumn.

Based on a stringent scientific assessment, this renewal is subject to certain new conditions and restrictions, for example the prohibition of pre-harvest use as a desiccant and the need for certain measures to protect non-target organisms.

The placing on the market of plant protection products containing the active substance remains under the responsibility of Member States - following the renewal of the approval at EU level, each existing product authorisation must be reviewed. The Implementing Regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the EU.
