On 12 March 2021, the Dutch ecosystem Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Food Waste Free United) organised their yearly event dedicated to the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3.

During this online event with over 135 participants, Rabobank launched their new 'SDG 12.3 Loan', that rewards the reduction of food waste with lower interest rates, with supermarket Ekoplaza as its first customer.

In addition, a new collaboration among businesses throughout the food supply chain, research institutes, social organisations, and government agencies was announced at the event. This innovative cluster aims to work on circular, animal-protein chains in which large-scale, high-value processing of residual streams are used to produce animal feed. The initiative is part of the new Circular Food Center: a new knowledge center and meeting place in the field of waste-free, circular food chains. Dutch Food Waste Free Week 2021

Companies, organizations and municipalities joined forces with Food Waste Free United to decrease food waste by 50% by 2030. Behavioural change at consumer level is a big focus area. The Netherlands aims to change social norms and inspire further action against food waste with its Food Waste Free Week, which will take place this year from 7 to 13 September 2021.

Last year, over 67 partners participated in the initiative, and an estimated 2 million Dutch people started making an effort to waste less food. To continue this success in 2021, the Dutch authorities will focus their efforts on motivating as many participants as possible to take action against food waste (consumers, but also companies, organizations and municipalities).

Only together can we make an impact and spread the word on the food waste free-movement!

A zero-waste food chain must take top priority on the climate agenda in the Netherlands

The reduction of food loss and waste and resource efficiency has no political color, but it has a positive impact for everyone, from an economic, social and climate perspective. The ambition to reduce food waste by half by 2030 can only be achieved with a systemic and joint approach, from producer to consumer.

In a letter to all Dutch political parties and through an opinion piece in the national newspaper NRC, the Dutch Food Waste Free United foundation urges to put food waste at the top of the climate agenda.
