Slovenian National Strategy for Less Food Losses and Food Waste in the Food Supply Chain

Based on the 2016 conclusions on food loss and waste by the Council of the European Union, the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food prepared a draft of the Slovenian National Strategy for Less Food Losses and Food Waste in the Food Supply Chain.

The Strategy constitutes the framework for a multi-annual action plan for all the stakeholders in the food supply chain, including consumers, as well as Slovenian ministries, and will contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 of halving food waste by 2030. The draft Strategy is published on the eGovernment website and is open for public consultation unti 29 October 2020.

Launch of the Statement on cooperation in reducing food losses and waste in the food supply chain

On the occasion of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the Slovenian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, together with other stakeholders of the agri-food chain, signed a Statement of Intent to enhance cooperation in reducing food losses and waste in the food supply chain. The signatories are the following: the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia, the Cooperative Union of Slovenia, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, the Chamber of Agricultural and Food Enterprises (CAFE), the Chamber of Craft and Small Businesses of Slovenia, the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce, the Tourism and Hospitality Chamber of Slovenia, and the Slovene Consumers Association.

By signing the Statement, stakeholders expressed their common interest in and support of the goals of the Slovenian National Strategy for Less Food Losses and Food Waste in the Food Supply Chain and their commitment to a respectful, responsible and sustainable from-farm-to-fork approach to food.

Other activities to mark the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste

The Slovenian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, Dr Aleksandra Pivec, visited four organizations which, among many others, contributed to the initiatives organised to mark the day. The organisations are the following: the Ormož Home for the Elderly, the SPOTUR Public Institute for Tourism, Sports, Youth and Social Programmes of Slovenj Gradec, and the Gorje Primary School, where a thematic exhibition demonstrating food waste amounts per inhabitant in a year was shown. These food waste amounts were later exhibited at MAFF in Ljubljana, where the Minister visited the Food for Life - Slovenia Humanitarian Society, too.
