Wholesale and retail sectors commit to act against food waste

date:  15/07/2020

More than 16 German companies from the wholesale and retail sectors committed to take action concerning food waste prevention. They pledged to donate surplus edible food to social institutions and collect information on food waste within their operations.

Additionally, they agreed to integrate additional measures to prevent food waste, to enhance food donation and to implement internal measures within their stores. These could for example be the promotion of packaging innovation to improve the shelf-life of products, the demand-oriented replenishment of the fresh produce range (especially at low-frequency times of the day) or the improvement of the quality inspection of products.

This commitment was developed in the context of the Dialogue forum for the wholesale and retail sectors, an initiative that forms part of the German National Strategy for Food Waste Reduction. The forum is hosted by the Collaborating Centre on Sustainable Consumption and Production in cooperation with the Johann Heinrich von Thünen-Institut and it is financed by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany.
