University Rankings

As research funding shares decline, UK and US universities face challenges in keeping pace with top-performing Asian counterparts.

date:  20/12/2023

The World University Rankings 2024 by Times Higher Education indicate a decline in the performance of UK and US universities, linked to a reduced allocation of institutional budgets for research. The University of Oxford maintains its top position for the eighth consecutive year, with other Anglo-American institutions filling the remaining spots in the top 10. Nevertheless, a longitudinal analysis suggests an overall decline in the standing of the UK and US compared to other higher education systems. Notably, China is making progress toward the top 10, with two institutions now ranking in the top 15. In the European Union (EU), the highest-ranked institution is the Technical University of Munich (DE) at 30, closely followed by LMU Munich (DE) at 38.

In the QS World University Rankings 2024, notable institutions such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Cambridge, and University of Oxford emerge as top performers across diverse indicators. The 2024 ranking introduces three new indicators to align with evolving student priorities and the contemporary missions of leading global higher education institutions. These include a commitment to sustainability, a stronger emphasis on supporting graduate employability, and increased international research collaboration to address the world’s most significant challenges.

Based on the comparison of the QS rankings between 2023 and 2024, it's evident that US universities prominently lead in both sets of rankings, constituting nearly one-third of the top 100 institutions. Following closely, the United Kingdom maintains the second position, featuring 17 universities in both the 2023 and 2024 rankings. The European Union secures the third spot, with 11 universities in the World University Rankings 2024 and 14 in 2023. Furthermore, Australia, China, and Hong Kong demonstrate robust representation within the top 100 across both ranking years.
