Investing in Europe: Private Equity activity 2022

Record fundraising in 2022 as long-term investors step up support for European private equity and venture capital.

The 2022 Private Equity Activity Report from Invest Europe, published on 3th of May 2023, reveals that fundraising in Europe experienced an exceptional year. Compared to the previous year, there was a remarkable 30% increase, reaching the highest level ever recorded. Here are the key highlights from the report:

  • A total of 801 funds successfully raised EUR 170 billion throughout the year. This represents the second-highest number of funds raised since 2008 and the largest monetary amount ever recorded.

 

  • Among the funds raised, EUR 23 billion was secured by 343 venture capital funds. Notably, 81 of these funds were first-time funds, indicating a growing interest in venture capital investments.

 

  • European companies received EUR 130 billion in investments, marking the second-highest level since 2008. This demonstrates robust investor confidence and interest in the European market.

 

The report also highlights that a significant number of companies, totalling 5,435, received venture investments. This resulted in EUR 18 billion being invested in venture capital, which is almost 50% higher than the average of the past five years.
