Experts praise Greece for significant impact of national research infrastructure and make recommendations on sustainability

The PSF expert panel praised the Greek national research infrastructures (NRIs) for creating an attractive environment for (young) skilled scientists and engineers, but highlighted that the infrastructures’ ability to hire and retain qualified staff is undermined by the salary levels and recruitment procedures in the Greek R&I system.

date:  23/11/2022

Another major challenge observed by the panel is that most of the Greek NRIs are not sustainable in the long term. This is due to a variety of factors, such as the absence of a single legal entity, gaps in funding that undermine staff retention, and a lack of funding for equipment and maintenance. The NRIs could be further consolidated to improve their effectiveness and ensure they all operate in line with international practices.

Furthermore, the panel noted that the NRIs have contributed to improving Greek R&I capacity, but should further develop strategies for identifying and engaging with existing and prospective users. The NRIs could also play an important role in supporting citizens’ understanding of science and providing the public sector, non-governmental organisations and citizens with access to data and digital resources in different areas (such as environmental monitoring, historical and cultural collections, and transport and logistics).
The expert panel developed 10 recommendations to help Greece ensure long-term sustainability of its NRIs for the 2021−2027 period. At the dissemination event on 7 October, Greek authorities reiterated their commitment to implement these recommendations.
