date:  05/07/2021

Research and innovation activities play an essential role in cooperation between Africa and Europe. Strengthened collaboration between the two continents under Horizon Europe’s Africa Initiative will provide concrete benefits for people and societies and serve as a catalyst for both Africa and Europe to collectively address common challenges.

The Africa Initiative under the first Horizon Europe Work Programme 2021-2022 aims to establish sustainable Africa-Europe collaboration on research and innovation, based on reciprocal commitment and shared values and interests.

36 topics, 4 pillars of cooperation

The 36 call topics of the Initiative include ambitious actions to target the four priority areas agreed on at the Ministerial meeting between Research and Innovation Ministers from both continents in July 2020. These are public health, green transition, innovation and technology, and capacities for science (human capital development, science for policy, Open Science and gender).

The total budget sums up to around EUR 350 million. In addition to these 36 topics, applicants are reminded that most of the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2021-2022 is open to researchers and innovators from all over the world. Applicants are thus invited to explore the whole work programme to find additional relevant topics to apply for.

The Africa Initiative calls for proposals are accessible on the EU Funding & Tenders portal, the central electronic portal for all EU funding and tenders. By clicking on the topics listed below, you will be directed to the portal and find details on how to apply, eligibility conditions, funding, and practical information related to each call topic.

For additional assistance, the Online Manual is a comprehensive user guide for applicants and beneficiaries of EU grants. The Horizon Europe Programme Guide and Portal FAQ are also useful resources for submitting a successful application.
