Top500 Supercomputers list

EU lags behind the United States and China in the number of super computers.

On November 2020, the Top500 published its biannual update of the top 500 supercomputers worldwide.

According to the last update, the Japanese Fugaku supercomputer solidify its number one status, followed by two supercomputers from the United States. The top 10 includes two supercomputers located in the EU, Germany (JUWELS Booster Module) and Italy (HPC5), at rank 7 and 8, respectively. The top is completed with 2 supercomputers from China (rank 4 and 6), two more from the United States (rank 5 and 9) and one supercomputer from Saudi Arabia (rank 10).

Overall, China leads in the number of supercomputers, with a share of 43% and 214 machines on the list, followed by the United States with 113 (23% of the total). The EU comes in third place with 79 machines in the list, up from 76 in November 2019. France takes the lead with 18 supercomputers, followed by Germany (17), Netherlands (15), Ireland (14), Italy (6), Finland (2), Poland (2), Sweden (2), Spain (1), Czechia (1) and Austria (1).

China is not only leading in the number of systems installed, but also the top 3 systems manufacturers (by number of systems) are Chinese: Lenovo (182), Inspur (66) and Sugon (51). Atos from France comes in 6 with 31 systems manufactured.

In addition to the main list, the Top500 also publishes the Green500 by identifying the most energy-efficient systems. According to the Green500 list, the most energy-efficient system is the new NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD located in the United States (position 172 in the TOP500), followed by MN-3 (Japan, position 332). The third place goes to Atos-built JUWELS Booster Module in Germany (position 7).
