Age is the most significant risk factor for COVID-19 fatality. Therefore, geographic regions with older populations are at a higher risk of COVID-19. The populations of Italy, Greece and Portugal are predicted to be at the highest risk of death from the coronavirus.

COVID-19 in unequally ageing European regions. (A) Case fatality ratio by age and sex (%). The elderly population (>65) represents the highest proportion of COVID-19 deaths. Males appear to be at a higher risk than females. (B) Proportion of population at risk of COVID-19 death (%) by country based on the overall population and age. (C) A map showing European regions by their relative risk of COVID-19 death (%) as a function of their respective age. Number of regions per risk group is given in parentheses. Circles correspond to the major cities and capitals of the countries.
