Eurostat Data on Tertiary Education Attainment in the EU

According to the latest Eurostat data on tertiary attainment in 2019, eighteen Member States have already met or exceeded their 2020 national target.

According to the latest Eurostat data on tertiary attainment in 2019, eighteen Member  States  have  already  met  or  exceeded  their  2020  national  target, namely Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden. In comparison with 2018, both Spain and Slovakia have reached their target in 2019. The EU as whole has also reached its target in 2019 with 40.3%.

In 10 years, the share of population aged 30 to 34 with tertiary education in the EU has increased by 9.2 percentage points. Across the Member States, the biggest improvements were registered in Slovakia, Portugal and Lithuania.

In five Member States, at least 50% of the population aged 30 to 34 had completed tertiary education:  Cyprus (58.8%), Lithuania (57.8%), Luxembourg (56.2%), Ireland (55.4%), Sweden (52.5%) and the Netherlands (51.4%). Conversely, the lowest rates were observed in Romania (25.8%) and Italy (27.6%).
