On the 6^th of July 2023, the European Commission published the 2023 European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS). The EIS is an annual report published by DG R&I together with DG GROW. It analyses the innovation performance of Member States and provides comparison with global competitors. It helps countries identify specific areas they need to address by evaluating their relative strengths and weaknesses in national innovation performance.

The 2023 edition of the EIS brings some good news:

• As measured by the Summary Innovation Index, the EU has witnessed an 8.5% increase in its innovation performance since 2016.
• At the global level, the EU is still performing slightly better than China and is closing the performance gap with Australia, although the gap with Canada, South Korea, and the United States has expanded.
• Denmark is the new top innovator. Other Innovation Leaders are Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, and Belgium
