date: 06/06/2021
In March 2021, the Stanford’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) published its fourth edition of the AI Index Report. As mentioned in the report “The AI Index Report tracks, collates, distills, and visualizes data related to artificial intelligence. Its mission is to provide unbiased, rigorously vetted, and globally sourced data for policymakers, researchers, executives, journalists, and the general public to develop intuitions about the complex field of AI. The report aims to be the world’s most credible and authoritative source for data and insights about AI.”
The first chapter shows several statistics concerning research & development in AI. According to the figures presented, the number of AI peer-reviewed publications has increased dramatically in the past 20 years, especially since 2014. The highest proportion of peer-reviewed AI papers comes from academic institutions in every major country or region.
By geographic area, China has lead the share of peer-reviewed AI publication with 22.4% in 2019, increasing the gap with EU which accounts for 16.4% of world total. However, the EU still published 2 times more papers than the United States.
