Anti-obesity implant among seven UK ideas backed by EU funds
Seven UK-based researchers will receive up to €150,000 each (£135,000) to test the commercial or societal potential of their projects under the latest European Research Council (ERC) Proof of Concept (PoC) grants. Christofer Toumazou from Imperial College – winner of the European Inventor Award in 2014 for a DNA testing microchip – is one of them. He aims to create an intelligent implant to help tackle obesity. His research may also have potential for treating cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Registration open for young translators competition
Registration for the annual EU competition for young translators, Juvenes Translatores, opened on 1 September, giving 17-year olds from across the EU the opportunity to put their skills to the test. They can submit entries using any of the 552 combinations of the EU's 24 official languages. Last year, more than 3,000 students, including over 300 from the UK, took part in the competition.

Europe's drought-hit farmers to get extra support
The European Commission has announced additional practical support to help Europe's farmers cope with the impact of this summer's drought. Measures include additional flexibility to enable them to provide their animals with sufficient feed. The latest steps are in addition to the package of measures published in early August which, amongst other things, will enable farmers to receive higher advance payments. The UK government has already expressed an interest in applying, which will mean farmers receive payments in mid-October instead of December.
