The evaluations of the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ 2022 call for proposals for funding are completed. 17 consortium have been informed that their proposals have been successful and will receive EU funding. Now they have to start preparing their grant agreement signatures. The projects are expected to start their research as of June 2023. They'll be sharing €95 million funding to contribute to restore and protect soils in the EU.

COP15: historic global deal for nature and people (21/12/2022)
On December 19, at the UN Biodiversity conference COP15 in Montréal, Canada, the EU and 195 countries reached the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Agreement. The Agreement aims to restore 30% of degraded ecosystems, protect 30% of the Earth’s land and sea, prevent/halt the extinction of species, and more.
Towards an integrated and convergent EuroGEO – The presentations are available! (21/12/2022)
The 16th edition of the EuroGEO workshop was a success. More than 250 participants gathered in Athens and had lively discussions on how to improve their contributions to an integrated and convergent EuroGEO and the post-2025 evolution of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO). Thematic sessions were dedicated to health, polar observations, oceans, agriculture, climate and biodiversity, just to name a few. The presentations are now available.

Promising EU-funded innovations projects futured at ECOMONDO (24/11/2022)
On 8-11 November, REA took part in ECOMONDO, the world conference on circular economy and technological innovation. REA colleagues answered questions about Horizon Europe and held a session on how funded projects are contributing to the EU Plastic Strategy. At the fair, 16 projects managed by REA showed their innovations in the fields of material recovery, energy and sustainable development. One of them, the CIMPA project, explains in an article why participating in ECOMONDO was a positive experience.
EU PROJECT awards innovations for freshwater ecosystems (24/11/2022)
The EU-funded project MERLIN has launched their Innovation Awards 2023, a prize that recognizes new and market-ready applicable solutions for restoring or enabling financial benefits for freshwater ecosystems. There are two different categories open: Product of the Year and Service of the Year. All companies that are taking part and are confirmed as eligible, will be able to place their product/service free of charge for 2 years in the MERLIN Marketplace (which will be launched during 2023). Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in Rhodes explains how images from Sentinel-2, part of the Copernicus satellite programme, allows the monitoring of land deformations to identify structures such as monuments that need urgent action. For instance, following the monitoring of the land deformation in Rhodes, the project was able to recommend ways to preserve the Rodini Bridge.

On 27 September, the Soil Mission Support project presented its final results to support the Mission, the EU Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. 15 members compose the EU Mission Soil Board: seven women and eight men. The European Biodiversity Partnership Biodiversa+, co-funded by the European Union, has just launched a call for research proposals on “Improved transnational monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem change for science and society”. The projects funded by this call should help to better characterize, understand and report on the state and trends of biodiversity. The EU-funded AMBER project has received the Outstanding International Impact of Research & Innovation award by the Swansea University for its work on how to fix Europe's broken rivers. The project created a Pan-European Atlas of In-Stream Barriers for fragmenting rivers. It also helped identify 25 000 km of rivers made to be free-flowing, a key component of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

Scientists supported by the EU-funded FORGENIUS project have presented a new data set showing current and potential future distributions of European tree species. Called EU-Trees4F, the data set provides a detailed model on how the ranges of 67 tree species will change between now and 2095. It will help to improve data currently available for the conservation of genetic diversity of tree species in Europe’s forests.

Seven new-funded projects showcased at the EU Farm to Fork conference (18/10/2021)
On 15 October, seven Horizon 2020-funded projects, managed by REA, were showcased at the Farm to Fork session dedicated to research. They are funded under the Horizon 2020 EU Green Deal call to tackle some of the food systems challenges as part of the EU Farm to Fork strategy.

A REA project ‘wins’ one of the New European Bauhaus awards (18/10/2021)
An old cement factory transformed into ‘La Fábrika de toda la vida’, an inclusive & participatory cultural space in Badajoz, wins the New European Bauhaus Award. The winner is an Observatory Case supported by Horizon 2020 project Open Heritage, which is managed by REA.
Horizon 2020 project Hydrousa sums two prizes this year (18/10/2021)
The project Hydrousa has received the Prima WEFE Nexus award. The prize rewards research teams successfully implementing combined management practices of water, food, energy and ecosystems resources in the Mediterranean. Earlier this year, Hydrousa’s circular business models in water scarce areas received the Mediterranean Climate Change Adaptation Awards, in the category of ecosystems preservation & nature-based solutions.
Horizon 2020 project wins the UN Digital Excellence in Agriculture award (18/10/2021)
Organic Farm Knowledge is the winner of the UN Digital Excellence in Agriculture title, in category 2: Capacity development and empowerment. The Organic Farm knowledge is an online platform promoting knowledge exchange among organic farmers and advisor, offering scientifically validated and accessible agricultural knowledge.
