High-speed rail network changes transportation in the Balkans
2-12-2024
An ambitious project is underway to connect the Balkans through a modern high-speed rail network, with initial results expected by 2025. Turkey leads this development, having invested $57 billion in its railway infrastructure, including the construction of a three-level tunnel under the Bosphorus to link Europe and Asia, slated for completion by 2028. This tunnel is projected to serve 6.5 million passengers daily across 11 integrated rail lines. Significant progress has been made on the Turkish-Bulgarian connection, particularly the Halkalı-Ispartakule segment, which will integrate Istanbul's Halkalı station with the Çerkezköy-Kapıkule line, serving as a gateway to Bulgaria and Europe.
