PKP Intercity has announced the companies vying for a contract to supply 42 to 72 double-deck electric multiple units (EMUs) for Poland's national rail operator. Alstom, Siemens, and Stadler are in the running, with each offering different models, such as Stadler's Kiss, Siemens' Desiro HC, and Alstom's Coradia Max. We now know the companies that have entered the tender for the purchase of 42 to 72 electric multiple units (EMUs) for PKP Intercity. These are three well-known global corporations whose trains have been carrying passengers for years.

The tender for the supply of 42 double-deck electric multiple units, along with maintenance services, was announced by PKP Intercity in October this year. The state-owned carrier may order an additional 30 trainsets under the so-called option right.

After a delay caused, among other reasons, by a large number of questions from manufacturers, the opening of bids was scheduled for Wednesday (November 27). However, PKP IC did not publish such information on its procurement platform by the end of the day.

Alstom, Siemens, and Stadler in the Race for PKP IC Double-Deckers

Only on Thursday, November 28, did PKP Intercity provide information about which manufacturers are interested in the contract. The companies participating in the competitive dialogue procedure are:

Stadler Polska Sp. z o.o., Siedlce;

Consortium: Siemens Mobility Sp. z o.o., Warsaw (leader), Siemens Mobility GmbH, Otto-Hahn-Ring, Munich;

Alstom Polska S.A., Warsaw.

Since no further details are available and the carrier has not disclosed them, we can only speculate about the types of trains involved. Stadler might offer Kiss trainsets, assembled in Siedlce. Siemens could propose Desiro HC trains. Meanwhile, Alstom might present the Coradia Max, manufactured in Chorzów.

The safe operation of the double-decker trains will be ensured by the European ETCS Level 1 and 2 safety system, the on-board diagnostics system, or GPS. The trains will be fully compliant with the Loc&Pas TSI technical specification and will be suitable for the carriage of persons with reduced mobility, in accordance with the PRM TSI.

The double-decker electric multiple units will operate in the economy, or InterCity (IC), category. PKP Intercity notes that they will be designed to serve popular routes, including those from Warsaw to Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok and Terespol.
