Welcome!
This is the first issue of the Africa Regional Centre of Excellence (ArcX) programme newsletter.
The Africa Regional Centres of Excellence (ArcX) programme is an initiative dedicated to advancing sustainable development through Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI).
The programme builds on knowledge and capacity development support provided to the Regional Centres of Excellence through different sectoral approaches and existing programmes to rationalise, align and deepen the EU-Africa partnership and consolidate STI support under a single strategic and coherent intervention.
As a collaborative effort between African and European Centres of Excellence, the programme focuses on enhancing research and innovation capacities to address the pressing challenges of the green transition.

Thematic Components
The agroecology approach integrates principles of sustainability, biodiversity and social equity focusing on harmonious interactions between plant, animals, humans and environment. To address these challenges, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) will coordinate the efforts of selected RCoEs.
The Biodiversity Component aims to support the sustainable management of biodiversity, forests, protected and conserved areas, land and seascape ecosystems across Africa, in view of maintaining the ecosystem services crucial to local populations' well-being.
The Water component started in 2024 for an expected duration of 48 months. Activities help achieve better water management and increased human development capacities (HDC) in the water sector in Sub‐Saharan Africa using a gender‐sensitive approach.

Cross-cutting components

Since December 2023, a dedicated Technical Assistance team provides support and expertise to INTPA and JRC to strengthen the programme’s coordination, develop knowledge management mechanisms, and foster stakeholder engagement, to leverage cross-fertilization across sectors. By doing so, it is expected to enhance the overall programme’s outreach and upscaling of successful initiatives.
Also part of the cross-cutting component, the Africa Knowledge Platform, online since 2022, has been identified as the backbone of the programme. It will serve ArcX as a central data hub, knowledge sharing platform and will help in filling the science-policy gap by providing user-friendly tools to help policymakers make the most of the data.
More information is available on the dedicated website.

First annual meeting of the RCoE for Biodiversity and Forests
The first annual meeting of the Regional Centres of Excellence (RCoE) for Biodiversity and Forests took place in Dakar from October 8 to October 11, 2024. During this meeting, key priorities for the three Centres of Excellence (CoE) involved in the component were established, and recommendations were made to synergize efforts to implement their projects successfully.

The Africa Regional Centres of Excellence (ArcX) initiative is dedicated to fostering innovation, research, and capacity building across the continent. Our centres are strategically located to address regional challenges and leverage local strengths. Each centre is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and staffed by leading experts in various fields. Although the ArcX programme is still in its early stages, we already see promising developments and laying the groundwork for future successes. Our next newsletter will highlight these developments.
