A straightforward and effective process for coating silver, gold and platinum nanoparticles with functionalized silica shells at room temperature has been developed by A*STAR . Crucially, unlike conventional methods for producing silica-coated metal nanoparticles, this process is based on water and does not employ alcohol, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

The radionuclide 209Po is the principal radiochemical tracer used worldwide to monitor polonium, an element known for its high chemical and radiological toxicity. Measurements performed in the radionuclide metrology laboratory of the JRC show that the reference value of the 209Po half-life used over the last 50 years is in error by 20%.
This manual covers proper calibration of PCR methods, estimation of measurement uncertainty, traceability of a measurement result and the way to prove the trueness of an analytical result.

Dear Colleagues, Welcome in 2015! With a successful year 2014 behind us I am certain we will continue this year our hard work towards new challenges set up in the 2015 Commission Work Programme "A New Start: European Commission work plan to deliver jobs, growth and investment". We will also celebrate the 55th anniversary of our Institute and 50th anniversary of LINAC. We will officially open our Security Threats Detection Laboratories in early summer and have our Open Day in October 2015. We will continue the follow-up of both 'Your Opinion Counts Events' and the recent discussions on values. Enjoy the reading of events and achievements from December 2014. Elke Anklam
It is reasonable to believe that terrorist groups will continue to become more resourceful. It is highly likely that they have tested bomb variations against the presently deployed security systems and have identified weaknesses worth exploiting. Thus, the industry must be proactive and ask itself what it would do differently the day after an aircraft bombing incident. Being more diligent would be one response, but, in doing so, consideration for better passenger convenience can and should be incorporated as part of any improved security solution. Joseph S. Paresi discusses the history of security screening and explains how we can improve both security and the passenger experience.

Global nuclear generating capacity increased slightly in 2014 as five new reactors began supplying electricity, while just one was permanently shut down. The year saw new reactors with total capacity of 4763 MWe connected to the grid: Ningde 2, Fuqing 1 and Fangjiashan 1 in China; Atucha 2 in Argentina and Russia's Rostov 3. An uprate at the existing Fermi 2 unit in the USA saw a further 15-20 MWe added.
