The meeting also addressed how to pedagogically handle claims, grievances, real or perceived injustices, controversial questions and sensitive issues related to the religious sphere of children. This is considered crucial for promoting a democratic space of reflection and to protect students from extremist propaganda.
On the first day, the scene was set by focusing on narratives, educational systems, challenges and the role of gender. The GO! Koninklijk Atheneum Antwerp showcased the methods used in their school and the pedological perspective behind it. This meeting proved a unique opportunity to invite students and teachers of the school to demonstrate the practices.
The second day launched with teacher testimonials. Teachers described how they were challenged by Islamist ideologies. Interactive discussions in break-out groups focused on what can be done by individual teachers, as well as on the levels of schools and policy.
The contributions by the students and the teachers showcased one important lesson learned: to talk with students, not about them. It is important to provide students a space to share and exchange ideas on matters concerning their identity, belonging, ancestry and religion. As much as possible, it is recommended to avoid intervening and to adopt an attitude that is open, interested, devoted, inquiring and critically-questioning.
