HERA engages at the 2024 Global Health Security Conference in Sydney

The 2024 Global Health Security Conference, held in Sydney from June 18 to June 21, served as a vital forum for leaders, researchers, policymakers, and representatives from governments, international organizations, civil society, and private industry.

The Conference addressed ongoing health challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, zoonotic pathogens, microbial resistance, and other global health threats. By fostering a multidisciplinary community of practice, the conference aimed to enhance global health security, and develop solutions to create a safer and healthier world.

HERA, represented by Policy Officer for Health Threats Bangin Brim, prominently participated in this significant event and contributed as panelist to various exchanges, underscoring our commitment to strengthening global health security in view of medical countermeasures through collaboration, innovation, and preparedness.

HERA participated in an engaging lunchtime panel discussion hosted by Chatham House on "Strategic Stockpiling for Supply Chain Resilience: Considerations for Health Emergency Preparedness and Deterrence by Denial". The event delved into regional approaches to stockpiling and emphasized the critical role of robust supply chains in health emergency preparedness. The panel featured experts from the White House Office of Pandemic Preparedness and Response Policy (OPPR), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Office for Africa.

Furthermore, HERA participated in another panel discussion focused on innovative medical countermeasures, emphasizing, inter alia, broad-spectrum antivirals as a essential tools for pandemic preparedness, offering valuable insights into the innovation landscape. Moderated by FHI360, this panel included representatives from the Medicines for Malaria Venture organisation and the University of Queensland, providing a platform to discuss the necessity and impact of developing versatile antiviral drugs.

HERA also delivered a presentation on its institutional threat prioritisation, highlighting its strategic approach to identifying and prioritising health threats that transcend national borders, ensuring the accessibility and availability of effective medical countermeasures when they are needed most.

HERA's active participation in this conference reaffirms our dedication to global health security. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with international partners to build resilient health systems and effectively respond to future health crises.
