Eurostat’s new interactive data visualisation tool on Top & trending skills allows you to explore the skills that are the most sought after by European employers. Based on online job advertisement (OJA) data and a selection of occupations within the EU, this tool shows the most frequently demanded skills in OJAs.
The tool was released in the context of the European Year of Skills, providing important insights for:
· students deciding on their study paths;
· job-holders looking to keep their skillset up-to-date or change positions;
· unemployed people searching for a job;
· recruiting companies aiming to gain valuable information about the demand for skills in the labour market.
Users can select countries and occupations of interest with the skills that are most frequently requested in OJAs posted each year between 2019 and 2023.
The tool features different visualisations, including a top 10 skills ranking and the evolution of their demand from 2019 to 2023. In addition, users can display skills into three different sub-categories:
· General skills, which are sought after in all occupation types, and include soft skills such as working in teams, developing creative ideas or using English language.
· Specific skills, which are required for specific occupations. The skills for these occupations include for example coordinate communication within a team, plan teamwork, implement sales strategies, maintain relationship with suppliers, supervise merchandise displays, manage the cash desk and use food preparation techniques.
· Digital skills, e.g. coding or simply – and still the most frequently sought after skill in many OJAs across the EU – the use of Microsoft Office.
The Top & trending skills tool was the subject of a webinar held by Eurostat on 14 May 2024. In the interactive webinar, the experts who created the tool presented the tool’s features and demonstrated how to use and interpret its outputs.
