The new mandate is finally upon us and just as soon as the work begins, Christmas is already creeping up on us.
But that doesn't mean the important work comes to a halt. Quite the opposite, in fact - it's only just beginning.
With water resilience now fully embedded into the work we do (our Commissioner is now for 'Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy', in case you hadn't noticed!) it seems appropriate to start with a mention of the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, which enters into force in early January.
The updated law will further protect human health and the environment from the effects of untreated urban wastewater, including micropollutants, to help Europeans benefit from even cleaner rivers, lakes, groundwater and seas.
It's all part of our strategy to continue tackling water-related issues head-on, including the global water crisis.
That's why we've been pushing for greater international cooperation on the matter, including at the ongoing desertification COP in Riyadh, due to conclude on Friday. Let's hope the issue continues to gain much-needed prominence into next year.
And there’s finally clarity for businesses and stakeholders in Europe and around the world impacted by the EU's deforestation rules. There’s now an additional year to prepare for application, lots of available support, and the newly launched EUDR Information System is ready for use.
Lastly, important information for non-OECD countries submitting requests for EU waste imports. The deadline is fast approaching - don't miss out if you're impacted.
That's all for now folks. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!
