Why an Access City Award?

Why an Access City Award?

date:  27/06/2024

Access City Award 2024 winners at the Award Ceremony

The Access City Award, created in 2010 by the European Commission, rewards EU cities for prioritising accessibility for persons with disabilities. Accessibility improves life for everyone and is essential to ensure equal access to fundamental rights and city offerings for over 100 million EU citizens with disabilities.

Over 14 years, 85 cities have won an Access City Award or Special Mention, from Ávila in 2011 to San Cristóbal de La Laguna in 2024. These cities develop inclusive solutions on accessibility involving persons with disabilities, policymakers and practitioners, enhancing sustainability and resilience.

The selection process for the Access City Award is divided into two phases: pre-selection at national level and final selection at European level. The national juries in each country shortlist a maximum of three cities. Out of the pre-selected candidates, the European Jury selects the winners. The juries consider measures taken and planned in the following areas:

  1. The buit environment and public spaces
  2. Transport and related infrastructure
  3. Information and communication, including new information and communication technologies
  4. Public facilities and services
  5. Exemplary considerations of accessible sports infrastructure (for the Special Mention)

The successful applicant must demonstrate a coherent approach to accessibility across all four areas and an ambitious vision.
