As a historical town, it has been tackling head on the challenges linked to making historical towns more accessible. This has ranged from a variety of initiatives such as pedestrianising the historic centre and removing barriers in public roads, ensuring almost full accessibility of public transportation, adopting policies to improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities, and ensuring outdoor events are accessible through their Orange Point initiative.

For its commitment to continual improvements in accessibility for persons with disabilities, San Cristóbal de La Laguna won the first prize for the Access City Award 2024.
