The sixth and final edition of the Together for Rights campaign newsletter highlights the right to full participation in society for persons with disabilities.

All European citizens should be able to exercise their right to vote in European and local elections,  choose who will make decisions and laws, and stand for election.

About 800,000 EU citizens are currently excluded from participating in European Parliament elections because of their disabilities or mental health issues.

Millions more EU citizens face accessibility barriers that prevent them from casting their vote. For example, accessing polling stations, the lack of accessible information, and persistent stigma are one of the critical challenges for persons with disabilities to participate in the electoral process actively.

Our champion, Susanna Van Tonder from Luxembourg, is a disability rights advocate, helping us raise awareness on this issue.

Susanna is a Member of the Higher Council for People with Disabilities in Luxembourg. Through her work, she is helping to ensure new legislation includes the rights and needs of persons with disabilities.

She believes the EU strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities will support her efforts to create equity and equal rights for all.
