Electronic signing of initiatives expands to Finland

Great news for Finnish citizens! You can now support European citizens’ initiatives online using your electronic ID. Finland joins 20 other EU countries that have enabled the digital signing process. Check the status for all EU countries.

What happens after an initiative is submitted

After organisers submit a valid European citizens’ initiative with numbers of verified signatures to the European Commission, the examination phase begins. Organisers meet the Commission within one month, where they get to present the objectives of their initiative. The European Parliament then invites the organisers to a public hearing. The Commission must reply to the citizens' initiative within six months after submission, setting out any action it plans to take (if any) and why. Learn more about the steps
